My father was an engineer and an inventor so as a child I had access to the most incredible workshop, which was under our house. It was filled with all kinds of dangerous equipment a young boy could only dream of—lathes, grinding motors, gas torches—which I was allowed to use and I did. The very first piece of jewellery I made was this ring when I was seven. It was a gift to my mum. I saw pierced and hammered the shank from a sheet of brass, and glued the stone on.
