Catherine is formally trained as a graphic designer and runs a graphic design consultancy in Adelaide. She is a founding member of the Australian Graphic Design Association and has served as member of the Visual Arts Advisory Committee for Arts SA. Catherine’s art practice satisfies her innate urge to create. Her work is made with very fine crochet hooks and sewing needles and a variety of fine gauge vintage metallic threads, reclaimed texts and silk threads. A graphic designer’s characteristically painstaking attention to detail is evident in each piece Catherine creates.
Catherine’s crochet vessels are formed by hand-stitching fine gauge thread. They are malleable: designed to fold and rotate for display or be worn as a small open sculpture. Catherine’s pieces, as objects and as contemporary jewellery, allude to cocoons, containment and perfection—an outer shell presented to the world at large, whose intuitive beauty renders it open to new interpretation and possibilities.
