When seeking inspiration for her jewellery Janet will often reach for The Vogue Sewing Book or a tome documenting the Bayeux Tapestry. After studying Gold and Silversmithing at RMIT University, Janet has conceived an aesthetic in her work that incorporates elements of embroidery and textiles, be it in the way pieces are constructed or the materials used. Over the past 15 years Janet’s work has been exhibited in various galleries throughout Melbourne.
Embroidery techniques and fabric are a major source of inspiration for Janet. She is particularly interested in re-interpreting needlework techniques such as gathering, fraying and knotting. Janet’s contemporary jewellery often incorporates hand made paper-thin sequins, varying from a minimal single disc to hundreds of silver sequins. Her work also references both man-made and natural patterns. Janet’s work is intimate and decorative—characterised by multiple, repetitive elements and textures that evoke a sense of movement and fragility.
