Joanna Campbell

Auckland, New Zealand

With a background in dressmaking and textiles, it’s little wonder that Joanna Campbell loves trawling through antique shops for fabric. Though seemingly unrelated to traditional notions of jewellery making, it is this fascination for the world of textiles that characterises Joanna’s work. Based in New Zealand, Joanna has been making jewellery for over a decade and maintains close relationships accrued throughout her diverse career within the wider art, craft and design communities.

Hints of Joanna’s previous career in dressmaking and her fascination for textiles are evident in her contemporary jewellery. Pieces have a delicacy and appear as if they’re sewn together. She explores techniques such as embossing, weaving, embroidery and pleating in her jewellery practice; blending traditional gold and silversmithing skills with technical innovation. Working in silver, gold, copper and copper alloys (shibuichi and shakudo), Joanna describes her work as “extending the wearer’s radiance”. Silver bracelets playfully take the form of measuring tapes and gold rings are inlayed with the texture of fine material. This creates a subtle contrast between the delicacy of textiles and the outward rigidity of gold and silversmithing.
