Kate Slade

Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

Being a landscape architect informs Kate Slade’s work in unexpected ways. Kate makes jewellery from the spare room in her Queensland workers’ cottage. Her training thus far consists of several classes at Griffith University as well as mentoring from and keen observation of friends. Kate’s jewellery practice provides her with a creative outlet that is free from the compromise that inevitably exists in everyday creative working life.

Kate uses simple techniques to create elegantly bold forms in her contemporary jewellery. These forms are then embellished with delicate elements of decoration. Trained as a landscape architect as well as a horticulturist, Kate is drawn to the detail and patterning of the urban environment, and the simplicity and elegance of botanical shapes. She employs technical drawing and design skills gained from her work as a landscape architect to formally realise her designs. The threads of her life and details of her passions are etched into each piece.
