Phoebe Porter

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Beginning with her training at art school, Phoebe has developed a unique working process combining traditional gold and silversmithing techniques with Computer Aided Design and industrial processes. While some of her work incorporates the use of custom made tooling, other parts are made using her lovely old Hercus lathe.

Phoebe is interested in new technologies and how these may be applied or referenced in her work. Inspired by mechanical parts and movement, her contemporary jewellery draws on the aesthetics of industrially produced components, surface finishes and materials. Aiming to refine each piece to its necessary elements, she often uses the fastening mechanism as a starting point, which then becomes an integral part of the design. Phoebe visually references manufactured parts to examine the value of handmade objects in a world full of mass production, observing that in a time of ‘inbuilt obsolescence’, jewellery is one of the few things to be cherished and passed on. Ultimately, Phoebe’s beautifully crafted pieces explore the connections between people and the objects that represent them.
