Sarah Heyward

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

From her studio in Brunswick, Sarah draws joy from the meditative process of working on a small scale. Sarah’s work explores the interplay between materials as an artistic medium and their representation in the modern world as collateral. Upon graduation from the NMIT Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology – Jewellery course, she received the e.g.etal graduate award for her work in gold, steel and silver. Before studying jewellery and establishing her practice, Sarah studied psychology at university and worked for a paralegal service, providing outreach to women in prison.

Sarah’s contemporary jewellery is inspired by the randomness and asymmetry of the urban landscape and the angular lines of architecture. The use of gold and precious stones combined with mild steel evokes industrial undertones, making a statement about the nature of society and our values within it. Sarah often employs the ancient practice of chisel inlay. Thousands of chisel strikes on each piece allow the fine gold and silver to mesh and become inlaid, without solder, between the grains raised in the steel. The resulting finish echoes the crosshatched pattern below.
