Zoë Jay Veness

Callala Beach, New South Wales, Australia

Zoë’s work explores the idea of transforming something humble into something special. This simple ethos underpins her accomplished jewellery practice. Zoë is a sessional teacher at the College of Fine Arts at the University of NSW, where she also studied and is now a PhD candidate in the field of Jewellery and Object Design. Zoë’s paper constructions have been exhibited in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the USA and the UK and in 2006 she was the artist in residence at the Edinburgh College of Art.

Inspired by nature’s growth patterns and proportional systems such as the Fibonacci series, Zoë has developed a method of making contemporary jewellery unique to her. She manipulates strips of paper according to numerical calculations and then weaves them onto stainless steel wire or cable. Each paper form, whether a brooch or a circular link in a neckpiece, requires precise planning in order to create an ideal outcome. Zoë enjoys the challenge of connecting materials of opposing qualities such as paper and metal (without the use of adhesives) and her work beautifully articulates the notion of simplicity through complexity.
