S.P. Joanne Huang is the latest addition to our collection at e.g.etal. Joanne’s pieces are formed of planes of perforated plastic painstakingly sewn together by hand. The stitching together of different shapes forms a whole that is at once solid and light, implying weight and gravitas but also transience. She says of her work:
“To further my education, my family immigrated to Australia. That’s when my perspective greatly opened up as I encountered different cultures and sub-cultures. In 2007, after I graduated from Monash University (Bachelor of Fine Art – Metal and Jewellery), I decided to further my studies in contemporary jewellery in Europe at Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School in Florence, Italy.
Travelling and the subsequent contact with different people from different backgrounds is what inspires me, and I believe this is reflected in all my art works and jewellery. I believe to entwine different cultures into jewellery is a way to carry those cultures and memories with you, no matter where you are on this planet. It is also a way to share those experiences with people around you. Also, after meeting people from all over the world I believe that the desire to cover and to discover both exist in our identities…whether or not you want to reveal or conceal parts of yourself affects human interaction. There is always contradictions in all of us and I also use this topic as inspiration to make my pieces of jewellery…."
