If you really can’t decide between two options – where to eat, what job to take, which plane to catch – then either one is probably ‘the right one’. So how do you decide?

Years ago Melbourne jeweller, Natalia Milosz-Piekarska was travelling around the world with a friend and found herself constantly having to make decisions. After a couple of tough decisions and differing opinions, the pair ended up using a small charm, nicknamed The Lucky Fool to solve their problems. “It was a small carved timber figure, with a big nose and big feet, and it acted as a guide and decision maker for us each time we found ourselves in a spot of indecision. We would toss this little guy up in the air, and whichever way his nose and feet were pointing when he landed, was the direction we would take, much like tossing a coin”, says Milosz-Piekarska. He became a treasured talisman and source of comfort to them over the three years that they moved around the globe. Not only did he point them in geographic directions, he decided on countries, meals, modes of transport and even pursuits of the heart.

Years later, Milosz-Piekarska was reflecting on this lucky fool and the way in which he influenced the direction her life took in those years of travel and beyond. “I have found myself fascinated with charms and talismans to this day. The power they can hold, the trust and faith we put in them and the way in which they can direct our lives’, she says.

In a continuation of her talismanic work, Milosz-Piekarska has created a collection of “Lucky Fools”, which are an abstraction of the original figure. Each charm is handmade by Milosz-Piekarska in either timber, silver or gold. They are pendants to be worn or simple charms to be kept in your pocket for when the need arises.

Beautiful, quirky little objects in their own right, these little guys could just about make life a whole lot simpler. Leave it to the Lucky Fool! We are wondering if Natalia’s first born (due anyday now) will have his/her name decided by the Lucky Fool!!
