Jo Hawley
After completing a BA in Art History and English Literature at Auckland University, English-born Jo Hawley moved to Melbourne in 2000, and been ensconced in her practice ever since. In 2012 she completed the Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology – Jewellery, at NMIT, where her work continued to delve into questions on proportion and scale, interior vs exterior spaces, the play of light on metal and the difference simple changes to surface treatment make to the feel or look of a piece, making the same pieces appear exceedingly delicate or very solid.
Jo is inspired by sculptural forms and architectural details, which reveal themselves in her work. The monumentality of simple forms – regardless of scale – are subtly integrated into the form, line, surface and contours of Jo’s jewellery. Her work is about simplicity and subtlety – about allowing shapes and forms to speak for themselves without needing additional decoration and detail.
