A simple neckpiece threaded with a long open cylinder made from the wing bone of a great sea bird, found sun bleached in the sand at Cape Woolamai in April 2017. Imagine the heights soared, the distances traversed, the storms braved.
Albatross bone is a material cherished by Maori for making Koauau (flute). Koauau are used to summon healing spirits, to make people laugh, to mark the stages of life, or to send messages. A hollow form encourages breath and flow. Bone reminds us of mortality so we might find peace in the now. The scale is small enough to wrap your fingers around big enough to hold against your heart, your throat, your gut. Smooth to the touch, warm on the body, white as chalk on coloured thread.
This piece was created for the 2017 exhibition ‘Talismans for Travel’ as part of Radiant Pavilion.
