Romy Mittelman

Romy MittelmanThe ancient practice of lost wax casting is very much alive in Romy Mittelman’s work. She loves experimenting with the wax’s texture and malleability before it is cast into silver or gold. Once transformed into the precious metal, stones can be added creating a unique pieces of jewellery.

Romy has explored spiritual and religious iconography in her latest range, which deifies the modern woman elevating the multi-talented and multi-tasking everyday heroines of contemporary society to the realm of the immortals.

Ancient jewellery techniques, styles and talismans are central themes in Romy’s work. She has also incorporated unlikely used objects in her jewellery, giving new life and value to once discarded items.

Romy’s jewellery practice began when she enrolled in gold and silver smithing studies in Rome in 2003 where she learned the traditional techniques and foundations of jewellery making. She returned home to continue her studies at NMIT, where she completed an Advanced Diploma in Engineering (Jewellery). Romy went on to complete a Fine Arts degree at RMIT in gold and silver smithing. A love of sharing her knowledge with others led her to complete a Cert IV in Training and Assessment. These days, Romy balances teaching the next generation of jewellers at Melbourne Polytechnic with developing upcoming collections.
