‘Light and shadow’ Exhibition. October 6-18
‘Light and shadow’ Exhibition at e.g.etal, 167 Flinders Lane, Melbourne from October 6-18.
Looking into the sky as children, we see our first significant circles – the moon, the sun, the dots in the skies as planets, stars, and realise a grandeur that can be spoken in a circular language. For the rest of our lives circles will be ever present. There is a solid strength belonging to this shape that is reassuring and powerful. Look around and notice how it is the dominant shape in your life.
Leslie Matthew’s new jewellery collection, ‘Light and Shadow’, uses the circle as its foundation. From this starting point the Adelaide jeweller has played with light and shadow. This contrast and duality is a recurring them in Matthews’ work; and a part of the opposites that exist within all of us. “It’s the light I’m drawn to. There is a distinction between that which is contained within the circle and that which lies without”, says Matthews. Either way, the circles draw us in, as they have since the beginning of time.
Using delicate antique beads, blackened silver and ceramic, Matthews has made a collection of necklaces, earrings and brooches.
