18ct yellow gold, Australian South Sea Pearl, Pink Argyle Diamond
This piece celebrates the experience of travel through collected treasures: A hand selected South Sea Pearl from Cygnet Bay where the artist worked and lived during a four month residency; and a one-of-a-kind Argyle diamond that was obtained through good fortune during an unexpected encounter. The pearl is ‘circle pearl’ created entirely by chance in the Pinctada Maxima oyster, with bands around its belly, reminiscent of a spinning top. The cap on the pearl is engraved with compass markings, as if you could spin the ‘top’ and allow the talisman to select your path. On the chain, an argyle diamond represents the North Star which for eons has provided protection and guidance to those who seek it. This talisman speaks of celestial guidance and is imbued with good fortune both through its concept and its materiality. The ‘North Star’ Talisman will guide you towards experiencing a rich and rewarding life.
This piece was created for the 2017 exhibition ‘Talismans for Travel’ as part of Radiant Pavilion.
