Anita Crowther
A childhood love of collecting gemstones and minerals veins through the creations of Melbourne artist Anita Crowther.
Having learnt lapidary as a child, Anita continued this passion over the years as it eventually formed into her vocation as a jeweller. Many of her pieces feature stones that she has cut and polished herself. A stone is always the starting point of inspiration from which her designs develop. Driven by curiosity and the pleasure of the hand making process, her pieces encapsulate the joy that she feels when creating them.
Anita has a particular sensibility to colour which is a strong element in her work. She explores combinations of colours and texture by shaping and combining stones to create an alluring visual balance. Predominantly working with sustainably sourced Australian stones such as agate, chrysoprase, turquoise and sapphire, with a special interest in opal, her collection shares with the wearer the awe inspiring natural beauty of the stones that she herself is so deeply fascinated by.
Anita completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) at Monash University in 2010, followed by an Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology (Jewellery) at NMIT (Melbourne Polytechnic) in 2012. She studied a short course in stone setting at the GAA in 2016 and took part in two stone cutting workshops in Germany at Trier University of Applied Sciences- Gemstone and Jewellery, Idar-Oberstein Campus, 2018.
