Laura Eyles

Laura’s work is a reflection of her approach to life. Each piece she makes is an adventure strewn with surprises: little worlds waiting to be explored.

Embracing adventure is a central part of Laura’s life and her making practice. Her most recent experience involved relocating to the remote Dampier Peninsula 250 kms north of Broome to work at Australia’s oldest operating South Sea Pearl Farm. Her time at the pearl farm allowed her to gain an in depth understanding and appreciation of the cultured pearling process and experience the incredible remote landscape of the Kimberley and world famous waterways of the King Sound.

In 2013 Laura crossed the Nullarbor to embrace desert life and work in the largest open pit gold mine in Australia. Working as an 80 tonne dump truck driver, carting high grade ore from the pit to the ‘Crusher’ to begin the long process of being refined into gold. Understanding this process has imbued her practice with a strong sense of respect for her materials.

Laura’s desire for knowledge has been the driving force in her extensive educational history. A BA in Fine Arts (Painting) at RMIT; Masters of Art Curatorship at the University of Melbourne; Adv Dip in Engineering (Jewellery) at NMIT then back to RMIT to study another BA in Fine Arts, this time in Gold and Silversmithing and then a Cert 4 in Small Business Management also at RMIT, and finally a Cert IV in Training and Assessment, which has lead her full circle back to TAFE where she is now teaching.
