Secret hearts, enduring love

Her heart was a secret garden, and the walls were very high.

Cinnamon Lee’s ‘Secrets’ jewellery series engages with a recurring theme within contemporary jewellery, which concentrates on the intimate relationships that can exist between object and wearer, rather than onlooker.

On the outside, strong geometric shapes conceal tiny hidden hearts studded inside. A pair of cufflinks presents a masculine face to the world, with a lovers’ touch concealed underneath. A ring’s interior makes soft heart-shaped impressions on the skin, leaving brief traces of affection even after the piece is removed.

The meaning remains up to the wearer: a private affection, an enduring love, a romantic gesture, or a secret liaison?

“Jewellery has an intimate ability to connect its owner to memories of people, places and events, “ says Cinnamon. “These may be shared experiences or remain quietly solitary … some details may be hidden, while others are exposed. We communicate with the world through what we allow others to see, what we choose to reveal, conceal, make overt or keep secret.”

The Secrets series was originally conceived in 2008 and first exhibited in early 2009 as an award winning entry in the BUDA Contemporary Australian Silver & Metalwork Exhibition held in Castlemaine, Victoria.
